Horse riding holidays and safaris in South Africa

What makes a holiday with HORIZON HORSEBACK special is the team of dedicated staff; all chosen for their love of horses and people, the bush, Africa and having fun combining all these elements.

“There are co-workers, cooks, stable hands and an office, but it takes time to distinguish guests from staff. Obviously the staff do less lazing around but the atmosphere is inclusive, sociable and open.” Time Out Magazine.

At the lodge...

At the Horizon Horseback Signature Safari lodge, we have a dedicated team of house staff who ensure your comfort throughout your stay. Rhynos, David and Maria, our chefs, produce delicious gastronomic delights every evening. One journalist recently commented "it was the best meal I've had in 10 years".

Kirsty became a key member of the team after experiencing Horizon first hand as a guest. Entranced with the beauty of Africa and African life, she moved her skills and experience from the business environment of the UK to the joys of a remote horse business in the African bush. Kirsty is an experienced rider and also a qualified masseuse and so is able to soothe aching muscles after hours of riding.

Kate Coleridge (, who is based in the UK markets Horizon Horseback around the world.

Horizon Horseback has a great team who keep everything together in the background; office, logistics and repairs and maintenance. From handyman Frans, to the team of drivers Anton, Titus and Frans, who make sure you are met with a smile and driven here safely.

On the Yards...

At Horizon Horseback we have a wonderful team of people who take care of the horses every day. Having over 85 horses is a lot of work and each one needs constant care and nuturing. Every staff member is trained and coached constantly by Shane, on how to behave around, interact with and work with horses. The yard staff working with the herd make sure that your horse will be groomed, saddled and ready for you to ride early in the morning and every afternoon.

Our guides...

Rides are taken with two guides; the senior guide will lead you through the bush, and both will assist you and share with you their knowledge of the bush, the wildlife and South Africa. Johnni, Mpho, Lucas and Silas have been with us for many years. Their families have lived on the farm for generations and they are an integral part of our community here. They have a unique knowledge of the bush (for example uses of plant) that have been passed on from generation to generation and they always have some interesting tales. They have all learnt to ride with us and have a great mentor and role model, Shane.

Interns and Volunteers...

At Horizon, we run an intern programme for local young adults wishing to gain experience in the tourism industry. Tourism forms a considerable part of our local economy and therefore makes up a large proprtion of the jobs. This district is characterised by having high unemployment, particularly among youth, and our vision as a local business is to try to assist young individuals interested in tourism to gain some of the relevent skills needed. Whilst here, the interns where possile, are exposed to all sectors of the business, from working with the horses in the yard, to riding with guests.

We also run a volunteer programme, which includes both south african and overseas individuals who come for extended periods to experience the riding and the bush and to gain insight into the industry.
